The Royal Film Commission - Jordan's managing director, Mohannad Bakri, is dedicated to raising the nations profile as a filmmaking destination.

The film commission, which was established in 2003, has continued to support incoming productions as well as supporting and promoting local productions, via initiatives like the Jordan Film Fund and expanding its infrastructure with the recently opened Olivewood Studios. Recent productions to shoot in the nation include Warner Bros' Dune movies and John Wick Chapter 4 for Lionsgate.

What are the current goals of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan?

Over the years, we have focused on several key aspects, including offering production services, establishing the Jordan Film Fund to support local projects, and launching regional training programs to build capacity in the industry. Additionally, the RFC has actively worked to foster film culture in Jordan, providing opportunities for both aspiring and experienced filmmakers.

Today, our primary goal is to position Jordan as a top filming destination by attracting more international productions to the country, while continuing to support and promote local productions. With competitive financial incentives, skilled local talent, and advanced production facilities, we are committed to enhancing Jordan’s presence in global cinema.

At the same time, we remain focused on strengthening our infrastructure and expanding our support services, ensuring that filmmakers from around the world can find a stable and creative environment to bring their projects to life.

How does the Royal Film Commission – Jordan work with incoming producers?

The Royal Film Commission is the sole institution in the country that facilitates all aspects of filming, including permits, customs, logistics, and government support. From the moment producers show interest in filming in Jordan, RFC provides comprehensive assistance—whether it's location scouting, connecting them with local crews, or navigating the necessary permits. We handle everything to ensure a smooth production process, and we are always just an email away, ready to offer support to filmmakers.

Have there been any recent developments in Jordan in terms of studios, financial incentives, and infrastructure, and what are the benefits of those changes for incoming productions?

Jordan’s film infrastructure is rapidly evolving. In September 2023, we launched Olivewood Studios, the country’s first dedicated studio complex in Amman, which features soundstages, production offices, and a large backlot—providing international productions with the facilities they need.

Alongside this, Jordan offers a competitive cash rebate of up to 25%, with special consideration for high-budget productions.

We also have a robust system in place for filming procedures and customs facilitation, backed by solid regulations and equipment rental houses. Visa access is easy, with most countries granted visas upon arrival, and we coordinate closely with key institutions like the Jordan Armed Forces, as well as receiving support from the Royal Family and the state.

What is the most challenging element of assisting productions?

Jordan remains a stable and secure destination, even with the current regional instability. In terms of production challenges, we find solutions from logistics to location management. Despite the broader situation in the region, business is running as usual, and productions continue without interruption.

The real challenge we face is with international insurance companies, as they have been hesitant to insure productions in Jordan due to regional concerns. Nevertheless, we are actively addressing this by working closely with our partners to ensure filmmakers receive the support they need to operate smoothly.

How did you become a Film Commissioner?

After spending over 20 years in the creative industries, developing talent and building capacity, I was chosen for this role because of my passion for the industry as a whole. It’s a great fit because it allows me to combine my love for creativity and storytelling with my commitment to promoting Jordan and helping our film industry thrive on the global stage.

How has the role changed since you’ve been in it?

The core responsibilities of the role have remained the same, focusing on supporting filmmakers and promoting Jordan as a filming destination. However, with the continued development of the industry, we’ve been able to build on the solid foundation laid by those before me, expanding our services as Jordan’s reputation as a filming hub grows.

Our focus remains on ensuring that productions have everything they need to succeed, while staying true to the Commission's original mission.

What are your goals for the future of the Jordanian production industry?

While our top priority is to position Jordan as a premier filming destination for international productions, it is equally important for us to develop the local film industry. Investing in local talent is key to ensuring long-term growth and sustainability. We aim to provide more opportunities for emerging Jordanian filmmakers, offering them the training, resources, and support they need to create high-quality content.

By building a strong, skilled local workforce and fostering homegrown productions, we can ensure that Jordan not only attracts global projects but also becomes a leader in regional filmmaking.

What should international producers know about filming in Jordan?

Jordan is like a natural studio, where you can cross the country in just five hours and experience a diverse range of landscapes—from deserts to ancient ruins and modern cities. Jordanians are known for their hospitality, making international crews feel welcome, and we have solid regulations that make filming straightforward.

I truly believe we have some of the best cuisine in the world, which is always a bonus when spending time here on a production.
