California Department of Transportation to increase permit rate from March 1

All filming which involves the use of public streets, parking structures, sidewalks, posting or lane closures, must obtain a Film Encroachment Permit.

The California Department of Transportation has announcned an increase to the encroachment permit rate, effective from March 1, 2025.

The hourly rate for encroachment permits for 2025 and will be increasing from $162.00 per hour to $173.00 per hour.

All filming which involves the use of public streets, parking structures, sidewalks, posting or lane closures, must obtain a Film Encroachment Permit. 

State law requires Caltrans to establish a fee schedule that fully recovers Caltrans’ costs associated with reviewing, issuing, and inspecting encroachment permit projects to be re-assessed annually.

The change will take effect on permits applied for after March 1, 2025. The rate will be reassessed next on January 1, 2026.
